Every house is a sermon of God's love.
What is Apostles Build?
Just as the 12 apostles joined together to spread the message of Jesus, 12 churches of various denominations join together to sponsor and build a home with a low-income family from our community.

How does it work?
Each “Apostle” is responsible for 1/12 of the cost of the home sponsorship ($4,200). Spread over one year, this is just $350 a month per congregation. Church members would also volunteer for various tasks related to the build such as on-site construction, mentoring the homeowner, inviting the homeowners to visit your church, preparing food for the workers, etc. a total of two work days, or 16 hours. Each church will need to appoint a coordinator, raise a little money, and recruit volunteers. It’s that simple. Habitat project managers will work with you to insure a successful build.

Wall Raising
What’s the process?
We recruit our Apostle churches in January and February. They have 12 months to raise the funds utilizing Sunday collections, bake sales, car washes, or other fund raising activities. The blessed family will be chosen in January of 2011, with ground breaking scheduled shortly thereafter. Construction will take two months, cumulating with a final house blessing Easter week.

What are the benefits?
Apostles Build offers members of your congregation a way to share God’s love and leads people to grow in their faith. It provides a chance to participate in a ministry of service that has a beginning and an end. There are tasks available for young and old, singles and families. They see the tangible joy and blessings of making a difference in a family’s life.

Our partner families:
Charlotte County Habitat builds homes with families who demonstrate a need for affordable housing, the ability to pay a mortgage, and a willingness to partner. All applicants go through a thorough screening process, providing references and credit history. Once approved, the families are assigned mentors and are required to attend classes on how to manage finances and care for a new home. They are also required to provide 300 hours of sweat equity in their homes and the homes of other Habitat partners. Once their home is complete, they begin making payments on an interest-free mortgage. Their payments are recycled to build homes for other low-income families. The money and time invested in Apostles Build continues to generate new homes in perpetuity.

Fund Raising Ideas

  • Designate a special collection one Sunday a month.
  • Ask Habitat for Humanity representatives and current homeowners to speak at a group session.
  • "Angels in the Attic" - Sell cut out silhouettes of angels to the congregation. Purchaser writes their name and a blessing on the angel. The angels are then attached to the attic beams of the Habitat home for "blessings evermore".
  • Construct a sample house out of Lego blocks. Sell each block for a true "hands on" commitment to support the project.
  • Obtain a blueprint of the house and cover floor plan with 1" grid. Each purchaser gets to fill in one square of the Habitat Home blueprint with a felt tip marker.
  • Food is always a popular way of raising money. Have the youth plan a pancake breakfast. Have a soup and salad party during Lenten Study programs. Have a bake sale and sell "house" cookies
