Apostles Build 2012

The second annual Apostles Build began with a Slab Blessing and Wall Raising Ceremony the second week of November, 2011.  The Apostles Build is a Habitat home in which 12 (or more) Christian Churches, each one representing an apostle, not only fund but build the home as well.

The following churches are partnering with Charlotte County Habitat for Humanity on Apostles Build 2012:

1)      First Baptist Church and Primera Iglesia Bautista Hispana Churches of Port Charlotte

2)      Holy Trinity Lutheran Church

3)      Pilgrim United Church of Christ

4)      First United Methodist Church of Punta Gorda

5)      Port Charlotte Seventh Day Adventist Church

6)      Edgewater United Methodist Church

7)      Burnt Store Presbyterian Church

8)      The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd

9)      Port Charlotte United Methodist Church

10)   Boca Grande Lighthouse United Methodist Church

11)   Deep Creek Community Church

12)   Faith Life Church and Deep Creek Worship Center

Abigail “Abbey” Houser and her Daughter, Raegen (age 6), are the recipients of this house.  Abbey feels very blessed as she recalls the events that have taken place so far at her home…”they (Apostles Build Churches) have written blessings and messages on my slab, have written more messages and blessings on the first wall that was raised and will soon be hanging Angels in the Attic”.  Several of the churches have sold paper angel cut outs, as well as Port Charlotte Seventh Day Adventist School where Abbey attends, to raise money for the Apostles Build Home.  These angels will be hung in the rafters and attic before the drywall is installed.

The house should be completed by mid January with a House Dedication soon to follow.  Charlotte County Habitat for Humanity would like to thank all of the Apostles Build 2012 churches.  If your church is not participating in this special Faith Build and would like to have information or a Habitat Representative to present the information to your church Board or congregation, please call Shelly Shepard, Director of Faith Relations at 941-639-3162 or email her at:  faith@charlottecountyhfh.org.

Boca Build

By Shelly Shepard, Director of Faith Relations

Charlotte County Habitat for Humanity is hoping to partner with the Boca Grande and surrounding communities (Englewood, Placida, Rotonda, Palm Island, Little Gasparilla Island, Cape Haze, etc.) for their first ever Boca Build home.

The Boca Build home will be built for a person or family in need in West Charlotte County/Englewood area.  The residents of Boca Grande and surrounding communities will not only fund, but build the home in West Charlotte County.  Ninety three cents of every dollar raised by Charlotte County Habitat for Humanity goes to pay for a Habitat home locally.

Over $5,000.00 has been raised towards our goal of $50,000.00 with a target date to start building in late March or early April, 2012.  If you would like to get involved personally, have a business or attend a church that might be interested in finding out more about this exciting community build, please contact Shelly Shepard, Director of Faith Relations at 941-639-3162 or email Shelly at faith@charlottecountyhfh.org.  If you would like to contribute financially toward this project, you can contribute online by going to www.charlottecountyhfh.org.  Your donation is tax deductible.  Please make sure to note “Boca Build” when you contribute.

There is an informational and organizational meeting about the Boca Build on Wednesday, January 25, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at the Boca Grande Community Center, Women’s Club room.  We will provide additional information about Charlotte County Habitat for Humanity as well as how you can get involved in the Boca Build and learn about any upcoming special events surrounding this project.

Leah and Greg Wilson, both 27, have been married for several years and like many couples, dream of one day being parents and raising a family.  Leah worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant and Greg currently works at Home Depot.  Not long ago, Leah was diagnosed with an aggressive form of Multiple Sclerosis, which now prevents her from working.  Her medical condition has severely increased their monthly expenditures for medication and doctor’s visits.  The home they were renting, despite the high rent they were paying, had a broken air conditioning system that the landlord did not want to fix.   Feeling like everything was caving in around them, through the grace of God they were directed to Charlotte County Habitat.  After making application and completing their 300 sweat equity hours, I’m happy to say that Leah and Greg moved into their Habitat home this past weekend.  Habitat was able to modify the interior of this home to accommodate Leah’s future special needs.  What a blessing to now have a home of their own that they can afford along with their medical expenses.  Leah is able to dream again and has a passion to foster children.  Despite completing her required volunteer hours, Leah continues to volunteer at Habitat….paying it forward to help another family.

Please help us continue our mission of providing safe, decent housing to families in need.  Besides a monetary donation, you may donate your gently used items to one of our stores, shop in our 3 stores, volunteer in our office, resale store, or on a jobsite or participate in our upcoming 13th Annual “Turkey Trot” 5K Run/Fun Walk on November 24th.  For information, please call 941-639-3162
