How Does the Program Work?

Habitat for Humanity is not a giveaway program but a partnership where the homeowners are involved in all aspects of the building of their home. In addition to a small down payment, each Habitat for Humanity family is require to invest hours of "sweat equity" in the construction of their homes. The average monthly home payment is between $500 and $550 a month. Homeowner payments are paid into a revolving fund which helps support the construction of new homes.

Frequently asked Questions

Owning a home is one of the biggest responsibilities in a person's life, and there are always many questions and concerns regarding homeownership. Each question is important and part of the Habitat for Humanity program is to make sure we provide the awnsers to those questions, so that our applicants and homeowners are well informed.

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions.

Q: Is there an age limit to apply?
A: An applicant must be at least over the age of 18. Our current Mortgages average 30 years.

Q:Do you build houses for single people?
A: Habitat for Humanity does not discriminate and anyone over the age of 18 is welcome to apply to our program.  Although the majority of our homeowners are families, we currently  have two single homeowners in brand new homes.

Q: When do you pay the $50 application fee and what is it for?
A: The application fee is for the background and credit check. The application cannot be evaluated until we are able to conduct the background check.

Q: How many sweat hours do I have to complete?
A: A family will complete 300 hours.

Q: Can I choose the location of my house?
A: Charlotte County Habitat for Humanity currently builds houses in Port Charlotte, Punta Gorda and Englewood. We do our best to assign the area the partner family requests, but the actual house assignment depends on the build schedule.

Q:Can I still volunteer after I complete the program?
A: We rely on our volunteers to build our homes, work in our stores and help in our office. We welcome you to continue to partner with Habitat so we can help more families in need.
